How do i cut glass?

I have a flat peice of glass about 7x3 inches and i need to shorten it by an inch or so. How do i cut it so it does not shatter? I have two swiss army knives, an assortment of culinary knives, a saw, some butterfly knives and one of those old shaving razors but i don't know which one to use...

  1. Hardy ha ha, how about nail clippers or better still a glass cutter.lol
  2. Use a glass cutter , a tool with a diamond tipped wheel , lubricate it with some white spirit , score it once and and snap the off cut over a matchstick
  3. You need a glass cutter which has a diamond blade.
  4. hit it with a brick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  5. None of those will help. Ask at your DYI store for a glass cutter, if you want a proper job.
  6. Scissors
  7. you are not going to cut an inch off even even with a glass cutter unless you have a vice to hold the total length of the inch you want to cut off. If it were me I would go to the hardware store and buy a piece of glass the size you need. Let them deal with cutting it the size. A piece of glass that size should be less than 2 bucks. A glass cutter will cost more that that. And a knife won"t do it.
  8. You need to use a glass cutter with cutting oil. And a straight edge to guide your cut. You can find them at most good hardware stores. You can use a knife or old fashioned straight razor, but you really have to be careful as these will often ( 1/2 of the time, or more) cause cracks or shatters. A glass cutter can do this also, but less often, especially after you gain experience. Before you make your main cut, try some practice cuts on the "throw away" piece. A few practice cuts will help you to figure out how much pressure to put on the cutting tool. Too much = cracks and shatters, too little= no cut. If you get a cutter, follow the instructions that come with it. Clean the glass well in the area of your cut. and be sure to oil your cutter. When you are ready to separate the glass pieces, use a slow, steady, even pressure. Kind of like you might use to break a potato chip into two pieces. Good luck!
  9. buy a glass cutter from a hardware store!
  10. Use a glass cutter,They are made for the job.
  11. A glass cutter nothing else will do Dip wheel in turps /light oil to start put staight edge on glass mesure to the staight edge LESS 1/8 OF AN INCH MEDIEM PRESSURE ON THE CUTTER AND SCORE THE GLASS WITH ONE FIRM CUT DO NOT TRY TO SCORE THE GLASS AGAIN TAP THE UNDER SIDE OF THE GLASS ALONG THE CUT you will see the cut opening then most times the waste will fall off
  12. scissors will work, but the operation must be performed under water. if you're south of the equator, you must cut right to left, due to the correolus effect.
  13. get a diamond wheel glass cutter, score glass, then place scored mark on very thin piece of wood[or similar plastic]apply pressure using towel so that glass snaps at score
