- I spoke with a representative a few months ago, I suggest you do the same, you can even ask a representative online. In terms of education, all you need is a high school diploma. More important with the CIA is experience, they require 6 months kitchen experience where the food is made to order. This ensures that you know what kind of industry you're getting into. Apparently, before they had this pre-requisite, a lot of students were giving up half way through the course because they realized that working in a kitchen wasn't for them. A lot of people see the fame and glamour of being a chef because of what they see on TV, when actually it's not at all like that. Anyway, if you're passionate about food, go for it. Get as much experience as you can even before attending the CIA. Almost all chefs out there in the industry say that experience is always better than a culinary degree.
