Cleaning chef whites with oven cleaner might work?

I know that there is a high risk of the material breaking down but im at the last straw before bring home so of our cleaning chemicals. I was thinking since the oven cleaner uses lye( sodium hydroxide) which is a very costic chemical with a high pH. My chef coats have a large array of stains and one that i cant get to budge which is metal shavings from sharpening a knife. I have tried oxyclean, bleach, color safe bleach, dawn soap, boiling water and vinegat and lemon juice, and all the other stain removal tips that i have gotten, removed stains really well but not all of them. any ideas? and i cant buy new chef coats because they are my school coats from the culinary institute of america and i have to have these coats.

  1. Have them dry cleaned. They should beable to get them clean and then you can ask how they did it.
  2. The metal shavings is the tough one. Try having them dry cleaned and tell the cleaners what the stains are and that you have tried to get them out. If they are honest, they will tell you whether or not they can do anything or that they will try. They do have access to better spot removers than the general public. Dry cleaning will take out any oils from the solvent. Good Luck!
  3. Do you have a "uniform shop" in your area? My mom was a nurse and she always had stains such as blood and medicines on her uniforms. She went to the uniform shop and got stain removers specially designed to remove certain stains. Also I have seen different stain removers in the "RIT DYE" section of Wal mart and my local grocery stores. They have different removers for different stains and they are made by RIT. Try that and good luck! I don't think it's is a good idea to put any item that has been chemically treated in your clothes dryer. It is a fire hazard and might ruin the dryer.
