- bento boxes are small takeaway boxes with differant compartments, they contain pickled vegtables , sushi , rice , fritters , beef and pickle sauce , chargrilled salmon with teriyaki sauce. and miso soup. soba noodles are a very populer dish they usually are stir fried or are served in a large soup base and also contain seafood , beef , chicken or tofu etc. the japanese make excellant curries which are very light and tasty and their beer is excellent such as sapporo.
- Osaka and Hiroshima are famous for their okonomiyaki. The two cities have their own unique styles of making it. Nagoya is famous for its misokatsu, hitsumabushi, and kashiwa. Tokyo has a wide variety of Japanese and foreign food options.
- Tsukiji Fish market - I've been many times but I can't recall the name of the sushi restaurants. THere an area inside the tsukiji Fish Market that can be considered somewhat like a cafeteria, although they're all individually seperated restaurants. They have great food there. I recommend you go down there around 6:00AM and look for the sushi restaurant that has the longest line. I remember there's one very good sushi place right by the Yoshinoya inside the fish market. Sorry I can't give you more details. Tokyo - Many varieties. I recommend you go down to Nihonbashi area on a weekday and eat lunch in that area with the business people. The food quality is very high not to mention on the cheaper side. Also soba (buckwheat noodles) is good in Tokyo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soba Also Sukiyaki is a good dish to have in Tokyo. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sukiyaki And for sure have some Ramen in Tokyo. There's a station called Ogikubo on the Chuo Line a few stations away from Shinjuku (Moving toward Nakano / Mitaka). This station is famous for the many ramen shacks surrounding the station. Or you can always take the Tokaido line to Yokohama and visit the Yokohama Ramen Museum. http://www.bento.com/phgal3.html Oh and if you're feeling adventurous, head on down to Tsukishima and have some Monja yaki. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monjayaki Tsukishima http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsukishima Osaka - Douton Bori area should give you enough choices. Definitly have some Osaka style okonomiyaki. Also while you're at it have some Takoyaki as well. Eating at kuidaore is also a fun experience. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D%C5%8Dtonbori#Kuidaore_.28.E9.A3.9F.E3.81.84.E5.80.92.E3.82.8C.29 Kyoto- For sure have some Kyoto Style Udon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Udon#Regional_Varieties And have some Yatsuhashi as well. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yatsuhashi Nagoya- As some one already mentioned, the miso-katsu is famous for being a regional dish. Miso-Katsu is Tonkatsu with miso. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tonkatsu And also Tenmusu. Which is shirimp tempura inside a rice ball. Uiro is also famous in Nagoya. Uiro is like red-bean jelly. (Dessert) Hiroshima - Have some Hiroshima style Okonomiyaki. Also Hiroshima Momiji Manju is cosidered a regional dessert dish. Also if it's in season, do yourself a favor and have some oysters. Hiroshima Oyasters are very famous. Bon Appétit!
- As you will probably make a visit to Shibuya or Shinjuku, like most people do I suggest you try out Za Watami, or Watamin. These are known as Izakaya, a place to eat drink and have a good time. They can seat parties from 4 to 20. They even have English menus for those who may not read Japanese. We usually go to Za watami and have little parties Other intersting places to eat that serve Japanese food, but have a very distinct and different theme of decor: 青龍門 or Seiryuumon (the Blue Dragon) http://www.soho-s.co.jp/seiryumon/index_fs.html it is actually a Chinese restaurant. You will not be dissappointed at all with the interior and atmosphere. Christon Cafe - Yes a Christianity themed restaurant. Strange but nothing offensive or sacriligeous at this place. http://www.ug-gu.co.jp/restaurant/shop/christon.htm Whenever we have colleagues and friends visiting, we usually go to these places above. All places above are opened until the wee hours in the morning. Usually 0400 or 0500.
