What is your WEIRDEST CULINARY EXPERIENCE?

It can be at home or while travelling abroad but it should be an experience which you have gone through youself! It could be food that you have eaten or perhaps the surrounding that you were in while dining.... p.s: i live in asia and hear and see all sorts of 'weird' foods..my 'weirdest' experience would be the durian fruit as it has this horrible stench coming out. haha not very brave i know! ;)

  1. Actually, being in the military, I've had a few different "weird" culinary experiences, but most recently, it happened here at home. My mother-in-law came to visit, and brought some food (she's philippino). Knowing that I'll try anything once, she asked me if I wanted to try bolong (sp?). Sure I said, so I ate an unborn chick (anyone seen fear factor?). I actually liked it, it tasted just like a hard boiled egg, but crunchy...
  2. I was drunk one time and tried to fry hot pepper rings and bacon. I fell asleep and almost burned my apartment building down. There was blue smoke everywhere and I had soot up my nose. Yeah, it's funny ...NOW.
  3. I was working on my internship when I went to culinary school in Balt Md. I was working with this older cook, around 40-45 yrs old and he was carving some prime rib in the middle of a dinner rush when he sliced of the tip of his pointer finger on his right hand. He walked over to the flat top grill an "seared" the tip to stop the bleeding. It scared the crap out me because it was when I just started into the industry. I asked myself what the hell am I getting myself into. Sixteen years later I am still in the business.
  4. I accidently used Cheyenne Pepper instead of Chili Powder. We had company over and everyone was coughing and their noses were running.....it was horrible, but SO DANG FUNNY!!!!!!
  5. My family and I were at this fairly swanky restaurant near Fort Monroe, VA, and I was lovin' this soup, probably ate 5 bowls, best clam chowder I'd ever eaten. Well, I was going for what was probably my 6th bowl, when one of the chefs carving the roast beef ,remarked to me that I was really enjoying the escargot soup. It had a fancy French name, but it was , basically snail soup. Have to admit though, I didn't gag or anything, and actually had another bowl, but it was quite the culinary surprise for me!
  6. I make sure I get to China Town in spring for durian season. It is a large fruit the size of a volleyball, it has slightly spiked skin and reeks a stench so unimaginably bad. Some people compare it to raw sewage. But if you have a spring cold, (I usually do) it is great, It has a sweet creamy texture, it is like nothing else. For those that can't take the raw fruit, many company's make Ice cream, all the great taste, with little or no smell.
